De Airport Railroad Express (AREX) Express -trein. De nadruk op Express omdat er twee typen zijn (Express en All Stop, die ik hieronder zal bespreken.

Vorig jaar kondigde ik een case study-programma aan waarin ik zou werken met een dwarsdoorsnede van lezers en hen zou helpen hun reizen te plannen en te organiseren, ze door alle stadia van reisplanning te lopen en een routekaart te creëren om ze op de weg te krijgen.

En, zei ik in het begin dat ik hun verhalen onderweg zou delen om je eigen reis te helpen inspireren.

Het is een paar maanden geleden dat ik voor het laatst hun voortgang heb bijgewerkt, en met het project dat afloopt, wil ik een laatste update voor elke student delen en hoe ze hun doelen hebben bereikt:

Jianne

Jianne is een 27-jarige kantoormedewerker uit Manila die ernaar streeft dit jaar een vakantie van twee weken te maken. Wonen in de Filippijnen heeft ze geen toegang tot reisbronnen voor het hacken van reizen, een overvloed aan visumbeperkingen en een zwakke valuta.

Toen we vorig jaar begonnen, was Jianne een spender. Ze vond het leuk om te winkelen, uit eten te gaan en had altijd “iets dat net opkwam!” Ze gaf voortdurend veel meer uit dan ze verdiende, dus moesten we haar alleen aan haar behoeften geven en het idee versterken dat elke extra uitgaven haar reis vertraagden.

Ik geloof niet in de schulden om te reizen, dus we hadden een weg nodig om haar financiën op orde te krijgen.

Omdat je niet kunt weten wat je moet snijden als je niet weet waar het geld naartoe gaat, had ik Jianne al haar uitgaven volgen, zodat we konden zien waar het laaghangende fruit was. Jianne had nog nooit haar uitgaven bijgehouden en ideaal weg, we zagen dat er veel kleine dingen waren die ze kon terugsnijden zonder haar levensstijl te veel te veranderen.

We hebben haar uit eten gaan, taxi’s, winkelen en drinken, en lieten haar een verandering -pot creëren waar ze al haar munten en kleine aantekeningen zou plaatsen.

Het verschuiven van bestedingsroutines is een moeilijk proces. Halverwege het samenwerken, stopte Jianne met het volgen van haar uitgaven, ging wat meer uit en viel over het algemeen van de wagen. Ze gaf elke maand nog steeds veel meer uit dan haar salaris.

Maar perfectie is niet het doel en ze besefte haar fouten.

Tijdens het samenwerken is Jianne nooit op reis gegaan. We begonnen gewoon te ver achter om haar op reis te krijgen tijdens het programma. Tegen het einde van ons programma gaf Jianne echter niet langer veel meer uit dan ze verdiende en heeft ze veel van haar schulden kunnen afbetalen en een spaarrekening kunnen ontwikkelen.

Ze is nog steeds verre van die vakantie, maar de eerste stap in het nemen van je droomreis begint het monetaire pad naar financiële vrijheid. Ik ben ongelooflijk extatisch en blij dat ze dat deed. Wat er ook gebeurt, minder schulden en veel voorzichtiger uitgaven is altijd iets dat je leven verbetert.

Dit is wat Jianne te zeggen heeft, in haar eigen woorden:

Matt en ik begonnen kosten te volgen en gebieden te identificeren waar ik mijn uitgaven moet verlagen. In het begin was het erg uitdagend, en er waren tijden dat ik me teleurgesteld voelde dat ik niet consistent was. Ik was een jaar geleden een shopaholic – het is niet eenvoudig om het uit te schakelen.

Na een tijdje leerde Matt me een andere aanpak: in plaats daarvan een dagelijkse dop van kosten hebben. Dit was veel effectiever voor mij. Als er iets is waaraan ik moet uitgeven, zou ik compenseren door het budget op andere dagen te verlagen. Het was veel gemakkelijker als ik een apart budget had voor ‘mijn geld’ voor de dag. Ik voelde me niet beroofd of teleurgesteld, maar veel meer verantwoordelijk en onder controle.

Met de hulp van Matt heb ik geleerd dat er verschillende manieren zijn die voor elk individu effectief kunnen werken. Je moet gewoon zoveel mogelijk proberen totdat je vindt wat voor jou werkt. Nu heb ik het gevoel dat ik een enorm ding heb bereikt en dat ik halverwege ben op mijn reis naar die speciale reis.

Diane

Diane, een 59-jarige uit Canada, heeft er altijd van gedroomd om naar Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland te gaan.

Zij en haar man wonen op het platteland op hun vastrentende pensioen. Er is geen manier voor haar om haar inkomen te verhogen of veel voordeel te hebben van de deeleconomie, zoals Airbnb.

Haar inkomen was misschien opgelost, maar haar uitgaven waren dat niet – en als Canadees heeft ze toegang tot beloningskaarten die haar kunnen helpen volledig gratis vluchten te krijgen.

Diane heeft ervan gedroomd jarenlang te reizen, maar dacht nooit echt dat het binnen haar greep lag. Reizen was voor de rijken, dacht ze! Ik wilde haar verkeerd verifiëren. Net als Jianne moest Diane een manier vinden om kosten te minimaliseren, zodat ze veel van haar beperkte inkomen kon besparen. Hoewel zij en haar man een klein pensioenaccount hebben, willen we vermijden dat ik daar zoveel mogelijk op gebruik, gezien het feit dat dat nog vele jaren moet duren!

Net als bij Jianne begonnen we haar uitgaven te volgen en vonden we veel manieren om haar uitgaven te verlagen. Ze schakelde over naar een meer betaalbaar telefoonplan, stopte met uit eten gaan, begon haar maaltijden te plannen om te voorkomen dat ze onnodig voedsel kreeg en stopte met onnodige aankopen uit de dollarwinkel (ze was een verslaafde).

Diane ging van het besparen van $ 20-50 CAD per maand naar het besparen van meer dan $ 500 CAD! Ze heeft geleerd haar uitgaven te herformuleren en aan Obje te denkencts as “things that take away from my trip.”

Additionally, she got her husband to cut back on smoking — which not only added years to his life but also money to her travel fund.

Since she is on a fixed income, she’s been able to save the same amount of money each month and now has over $6,500 CAD saved toward her trip!

The greatest thing we’ve done is to get her on the travel hacking train. She subscribed for the American express and TD bank Aeroplan credit report cards, met the low minimum spending requirements, and — combined with her old points balance — has a total of 90,000 Aeroplan points as well as 17,000 Air Miles (an account that she can use for flights, too).

This will cover her entire flight to Australia and give her some extra points for any regional flights she might take. With discipline, the support of her family, and travel hacking, she’s made this long-term dream a reality, all while on a fixed income. It took time but she did it.

Now, she is going to Australia, new Zealand, and the cook Islands with her sister in August for six weeks. She’s ecstatic to finally check out some pals she hasn’t seen in decades because she never could afford to do it before!

As Diane says:

I am so ecstatic to be so far along in my planning. I had been wanting to travel to Australia to check out pals for over ten years but never seemed able to get rid of lots of obstacles. some of them were that I couldn’t seem to save money for this trip, decide when to go, and I didn’t know how to utilize air miles.

Fortunately for me, Matt was able to take me step-by-step through the planning process so I was no longer overwhelmed. He showed me how to get and maximize Aeroplan miles to fully cover the price of airfare, he showed me where I could cut some costs to save up for spending money, and a lot of essential to me, he showed me how to feel good when I was no longer wasting money on mindless shopping considering that I now had goal I wanted to achieve. The money in my separate “travel account” brings a smile to my face at the rate it is increasing.

But one of the most essential things I learned from Matt was how to deal with anxiety. I suffer from claustrophobia and anxiety, so just getting on an airplane is stressful to me. but knowing that Matt also had issues but overcame them and keeps traveling makes me realize I too could travel and delight in it. I am so ready to go!

Sander and Jolien

This couple from the Netherlands has always been in great shape. They never really needed my help on the financial side, though I helped them get better at tracking their expenses (which they like doing), create a separate bank account for their savings, and work up an ideal budget for their trip.

Toward the end of the year, they stumbled a bit in their savings but have now canceled a few bills and really see that every euro spent now is one not spent on the road. They even recently moved back in with their parents to minimize their rent.

By the time the leave for Brazil next month, they will have saved close to 30,000 EUR between the two of them!

Since they were financially in the clear (and planned to work along the way anyway), we spent the last of our time together going over their packing list, helping them get the gear they need, and going through our pre-trip checklist to make sure they didn’t forget anything. The packing list they sent to me was over 3 pages long!

After slashing their packing list, I had them put everything in their backpack so they can see how much it weighs in buy to find a lot more gear to cut, as well as show them that what we think is needed is typically not. They also did a camping dry run to see what they’ve included but won’t actually use.

Most of my work with them was simply getting them used to monitoring their spending (so they keep it up on the road) and helping them with the logistics of getting ready to sell it all and travel the world!

Here’s what they say:

We are ideal on track moneywise. We will start our trip with €5K a lot more than first anticipated, so we are very pleased about how everything went. We really cut down our expenses now. We do not go out to dinner or we don’t see a motion picture in the theater anymore. We even stopped getting clothes.

In December, it was hard to keep a keen eye on our expenses. We kind of failed it due to all the festivities and parties. We spent too much but Matt’s help put us ideal back on track.

Our greatest challenge in the last two months before we finally start our journey is probably trying to bring along only the bare necessities. Our first packing list was way too long. together with Matt we discussed what is helpful along the way and what is just extra weight. In the next month, we will purchase our last goods and we are going to walk a two-day trail to get used to our backpack, shoes, and just the kilometers.

De Brandon -familie

De Brandons zijn een Midden-Amerikaans echtpaar uit Indiana met twee jonge zonen die vanaf juni van start gaan voor een reis rond de hele wereld. Echtgenoot Michael is gepensioneerd en partner Jennifer is een leraar (evenals degene die de reis organiseert).

Back in mid-April, I packed my bags, filled my automobile with books, said goodbye to my apartment, and headed west for a six-week road trip through seven states.

Last week, four thousand miles, ten books, and 67 hours of driving later, after a route that took me west to the Grand Canyon, north to Boise, west to Portland, and down the coast to Los Angeles, my fifth us road trip kwam tot een einde.

Road trips give me a chance to not only see the country but recharge my batteries. As I drive, I listen to audiobooks and music and call friends. In destinations where I’m not visiting friends, I sightsee, eat, read, write, and go to bed early.

On these road trips, I drink less, sleep more, reflect more, and chill out more. They’re my “me time.”

Especially because I check out as many national parks as possible. and lots of time alone in nature is good for the soul.

This road trip was no different (though at six weeks, it was one of the shorter ones I’ve done). I revisited the Grand Canyon, saw Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and some other parks for the first time.

The Grand Canyon was just as grand as I remembered it. during my first visit, I hiked to the bottom, but, due to COVID, that wasn’t possible now. I just did an out-and-back to Skeleton point and took in the view from the rim.

(Tip: Take Rt. 64 to enter and exit the park. This takes you to the eastern part of the canyon, where there are tons of lookouts, and over a super scenic road. It’s way better than driving from Flagstaff via 180. It takes longer but the drive is way more majestic. Sunset Crater and Wupatki national Monument are also along the way.)

Then there was Utah, which was the highlight of my entire trip. I never realized that the state had so many national parks in it — nor that it was so beautiful.

I only visited Zion and Bryce Canyon national Parks this trip. Zion was everything I dreamed it to be. The rocks and peaks all are so enormous — it truly makes you feel small.

However, I liked Bryce a lot more. I found the trails less crowded and the landscape, with its pastel reds and oranges, prettier. There was just something about those hoodoos (tall, thin spires of rock), wide canyons, and colors that did it for me more. There seemed to be more trails there too, especially further down the canyon.

And then there was Salt Lake City. I’ll write more about why I loved it as much as I did later on, but for now, I’ll just say that there was way more stuff to do there than I thought. lots of art, hikes you can access right from downtown, and grade A beer gardens.

But the real fun was when I ran into a reader at one of those beer gardens and they took me to a house party filled with twentysomethings employed at ski resorts nearby or transplants working for one of the new tech companies in town (SLC has a growing tech scene as people leave California). It was kind of amazing to be at a party with strangers again, and even though I’m way past my twenties, everyone was pretty welcoming (though they did kick my butt at beer pong!).

Los Angeles (always)

Flagstaff, Arizona (a fun college town with a good brewery scene)

Yosemite Nationaal Park

And the lowlight? Roswell, new Mexico. There just wasn’t much to do there and the alien stuff is just terribly done! It’s not even fun kitschy. There is one really amazing contemporary art museum there though.

No matter how many road trips I make, I’m still blown away by how big this country is. despite spending the past year just road-tripping around the country (and not counting all the shorter trips here and there or vacations to places like Hawaii over my lifetime, which probably add up to a couple of years as well), I’ve only seen a fraction of the land I grew up in.

It boggles my mind that I have seen so much yet still so little.

On the whole, this trip was a bit more sedate than my previous ones. though COVID cases were declining, more people were getting vaccinated and getting outside, and there was more of a lively atmosphere than last summer, a lot of things were still closed, restrictions were still in place, and some people were still weird about meeting strangers.

The longer my road trip went on, though, the more positive energy there was in the air. It’s made me super excited for this summer and all my Europe travels!

Travel is a battery that needs to be recharged, and, with many COVID restrictions loosening up, my battery is at 110% right now. This trip gave me a taste, but I’m ready for hostels, Greek beaches, felLage reizigers en zien waar de weg me naartoe brengt.

Have you ever went to a church or cathedral and stopped in awe to look at the colourful stained glass windows? once upon a time stained glass was used in all churches and noble homes. Nowadays it’s sadly a dying art.

The museum is one of a kind and along with the history of stained glass production, displays art from the 20th and 21st century on 7 floors in a sunlit building, which once served as a grain mill.

In this museum you can see the same windows as you see in cathedrals in front of your face, not somewhere high above your head, where you can’t distinguish any detail of the scene depicted. You can even take a workshop in making your own stained glass art pieces. and you’ll learn that the most expensive colour is yellow as it’s produced by mixing in precious metals.

3 | German Mining Museum: everything There Is To know about Mining

Well, yes, it’s a museum with machinery and stones on display, I admit. The most significant exhibit, however, is the 70+ m high green headframe, which previously stood above the main shaft of the Germania mining complex in Dortmund.

It was transported and rebuilt in Bochum in 1973. If weather conditions allow it, don’t miss the view over the Ruhr region from its top. and if that’s not fascinating enough, 20 m below the ground, the museum maintains a visitor mine, constructed to resemble a real mine, with a 2.5 km network of tunnels.

Mine Rambeck closed in 1974 as the amount of lead and zinc won was not worth to maintain it and reopened for visitors just a few months later with everything still in its place.

One of the ex-miners is now your friendly guide and joins you on a ride in the original miners’ train into the depths of the mountain, where he shows you how the machinery works, how the ore was transported to the surface and where, well, miners went to the toilet during their shifts.
